In practice, testing is carried out to AS/NZS 3760, the standard for in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. After that, every item gets a visual inspection and an electrical test, then a tag showing the test date, the next date due and the technician who did it. You get an asset register and a compliance report you can hand straight to an auditor or a main contractor.

What is test and tag?
Test and tag is a visual inspection plus an electrical test of any appliance or lead that plugs in, carried out to AS/NZS 3760. Is test and tag a legal requirement in New Zealand?
There is no single law that says every appliance must carry a tag. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, a PCBU has to make sure equipment is safe for workers to use, and testing to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way of demonstrating that. In practice, most main contractors, site inductions and insurers require current tags before you can work on site.
