Your charging options
Portable three-pin cable. Most EVs come with one. It plugs into an ordinary socket and it works, slowly. It must have a built-in control and protection device (IC-CPD) — check yours does before you plug it in, because a cable without one draws a heavy sustained load through a socket that was never designed for it.
Wall-mounted charger. If there is space in the garage or on an exterior wall, a dedicated wall unit is the faster and safer way to charge. They run on single or three-phase supply, and most household EVs fill overnight on a 7kW unit. A quality wall charger generally sits between $1,300 and $3,000 before installation, depending on brand, charging speed and features.
The switchboard is usually the real question
A 7kW charger wants its own dedicated circuit. On a lot of the older housing through Papakura, Manurewa and Otara the board has no room left, and some still carry rewireable fuses that have to be replaced before anything else goes on them. We check the board before quoting, so the number you are given is the number you pay.
Long driveways in Franklin
On lifestyle blocks around Waiuku, Clarks Beach, Glenbrook and Patumahoe the charger often needs to sit at a garage or shed a fair distance from the house. That is a cable run with a voltage-drop calculation behind it, not a guess — undersized cable over forty metres charges slowly and runs warm. We size it properly, and travel is charged on a zone basis from Takanini so you know that cost up front too.
